Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has flagged off the construction of shore protection works in five communities  of Ndoni District of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.

The massive shore protection works will cover  Aze-Azaga, Isukwa, Owikwu, Obiofu and Utu Communities in Ndoni District.

Former Rivers State Governor, Dr Peter Odili, who hails from Ndoni District declared that Governor Wike by his action has wiped off a 10-year old tear from his eyes.

Flagging off the construction of shore protection works at Ndoni on Thursday, Governor Wike said that the project will help protect the communities  from the devastating effects of the River Niger.

He directed the Permanent Secretary of the Special Projects Bureau to relocate to Ndoni District to ensure the progress of work and the completion of the shore protection works within the scheduled time

The governor directed that  the contractor should conclude the soil test in the area by the end of December 2017, so that construction work can start by January 2018.

He said: "When your father starts a project, it behoves you to complete the project.  We shall drive the shore protection works to completion.

"All the remaining communities  mentioned by the Caretaker Committee Chairman of ONELGA will be added to this project. I don't want excuses because  we have  the money  on ground to complete the project ".

He said the Former Rivers State Governor never failed the people of the state, hence the Rivers State Government will honour him by completing the project in line with approved specifications.

He said: "Dr Odili has never failed  us and we will not fail him. You stood by us to ensure our political growth.  I thank you for your political guidance.  We are benefiting from your experience and direction.

"If you see the five communities, you will pity them. This project  will change their fortune.  I have directed the contractor to also employ  youths from the communities".

He charged community youths to support the  contractor, adding  that they should not make crippling monetary demands from the contractor.

In his remarks, Former Rivers State Governor, Dr Peter Odili said since he left office over 10years ago , his only regret  has been his failure to execute the shore protection works for his people.

He said the execution of shore protection works was one of the major campaign promises of Governor Wike.

Odili said: "When history is being made, the makers of history don't know. You have wiped out a ten-year old tear from my face.

"Everyday since I left office ten years ago, I remember that one of the things I failed to do was to protect the shores of this area. We shall continue to support the Rivers State Governor to make Rivers State the first  among equals".

Permanent Secretary of Bureau for Special Projects, Sir Onwuzuruike Okere stated that bureau will closely supervise the project to ensure professional execution.
