Raul Gonzalez, Cesar Rodriguez, Telmo Zarra, Leo Messi and Enrique Castro 'Quini' are the five best players in the 85-year history of La Liga, according to a study by CIHEFE (Centre for investigations into the history and statistics of Spanish football).
The study, taken by Jose Antonio Ortega as part of an analysis of the 9,117 footballers who have played in the top flight since 1928-29 until 15-16, looks at many things, including points added, goals, assists, winning the ball back, fouls, etc.
Top is Madrid's Raul, with 528 points, while second is Cesar Rodriguez 524, who spent most of his career at Barcelona. Third is Telmo Zarra, the Athletic player, with 493 points. Messi is fourth on 490 points.
Quini is fifth, the former Sporting Gijon and Barcelona man, on 488 points. Messi is the only active player in the top five.
The rest of the top 10 are Juan Arza, Alfredo di Stefano, Francisco ento, Santillana, and Guillermo Gorostiza.
After Messi the next active player is Cristiano Ronaldo, 23rd, before David Villa, 32nd, Xavi Hernandez 49th, Iker Casillas 62.
