ELCUTIEE'S WEEKEND PERSONALITY: Maestro ThankGod "Teekay" Okobia

Maestro ThankGod "Teekay" Okobia is one Naija Classical/operatic pop musician I admire so much. This Gentle Man uplifted my love for classical music and I love him for that.

Unlike others,Teekay gives classical music a flavour that makes me say "please don't stop singing"

Teekay on stage leaves me dumb founded. What do I concentrate on? his adorable tuxedo? His cute self or awesome voice? *blushing"

You need to hear him sing Andrea Bocelli’s “Con te Partirò” (Time to Say Goodbye). Oh my!

The song was written as a duet and often performed by Bocelli (tenor) with sopranos most popularly Sarah Brightman. I never knew it was possible for a Nigerian, and one as young as Mr. Okobia, to perform this Italian song, probably the most famous and emotion-laden classical piece in contemporary times.  But Mr. Okobia deftly navigates the duet, paying careful attention to the vocal variations. He also did Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” and “Con te Partirò.” Some time ago and it was "awesome"

The 25-year-old computer science student of the University of Port Harcourt has never had voice training. He stumbled on classical music because it helped him to study. He said, “it was quite weird because it was not the kind of music a young guy would listen to.” He took it a step further by researching “the legendary three tenors: Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Careras.” As he listened to their CDs, he dreamt of singing like them.

At the age of 17, a young man from Agbor in Ika-South, Delta, began to do just that, probably to the surprise of those around him, when he joined an interdenominational choir. It was there that the music director “discovered that I actually had the potential to become a great classical musician.”

Even then, Mr. Okobia didn’t consider studying classical music. He simply wanted to be “a good singer” while continuing with computer science and pursuing his goal to become “an IT expert” (specialising in database administration). Incidentally, computer science opened the door to his first stint in the musical limelight.

“It all started in 2011, when I first performed at the annual conference of the NCS in Abuja.” He has since then sung at major ICT events, concerts, weddings, dinner/award nights and churches around the country. He has also recorded a few songs but he says he needs the appropriate platform or manager to get him to the next level. “My goal is to work hard to become one of the best classical musicians in the world and broaden the appeal of classical music to the larger Nigerian society.”

He performed/“Bocellized”at the 11th annual conference of the Nigerian Computer Society in Iloko-Ijesha, Osun State, the e-Nigeria Conference organised by the National Information Technology Development Agency in Abuja, Dec. 3-5, 2013 but to mention a fewm
